Rod Elements
Among the extensive range of products that the team at Hedin Heaters supplies to our customers, rod elements are among the most versatile.
Also known as tubular heating elements or sheath wire heating elements, they are commonly used in a variety of applications, including:
- Immersion heaters
- Air heating
- Infrared
- Circulation ovens
- Defrosting (refrigeration)
- Chemical applications
- Castings
- and much more…
Our rod elements are very robust and reliable, with a high resistance to shock and vibration, and are capable of withstanding working pressures up to 2000 p.s.i, as such they can achieve a maximum temperature of 750°C.
In the past the company has supplied process ovens and industrial furnaces under the name Hedinair. We can supply spare tubular heating elements, controls, insulation, components and in some cases will be able to refurbish or replace old Hedinair products in full.
Rod Element Construction
Used straight or formed into a required shape, rod elements consist of an outer metal (or Teflon) sheath which houses a helically coiled 80/20 nickel chrome-resistant wire welded to a terminal/connection pin at each end. This wire is insulated by Magnesium Oxide (MgO) powder inside the housing, and the full length is passed through swaging rollers to produce a highly electrically resistant, high-heat conduction element. The sheath is sealed with a ceramic insulator bung using silicon or epoxy. The length of the terminal pin inside the sheath will not heat up so the heaters will have cold lengths/zones at each end.
Rod Element Forms
Different applications have different demands on a heat source, from specific heat zones to restricted operating space, because of this our rod elements are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes, and we can tailor the rod heaters directly to the specifications you require.
Rod Element Dimensions
We can produce elements up to a maximum length of 8,600mm, dependent upon the diameter.
If you require a standardised product, our regular diameters are:
- 6.35mm (¼”)
- 12.7mm (½”)
- 8.0mm
- 13.3mm
- 8.5mm
- 16mm
- 9.5mm ( ⅜”)
- 18mm
- 10mm
- 22mm
- 11mm
The table below shows the maximum length (in mm) of rod element available for each diameter and material.
Rod Element Materials
We can make the elements from the following materials:
- Incoloy 600, 800, 825
- Mild steel
- Stainless Steel 304, 316, and 321
- Copper
- Titanium
- Teflon
Rod Element Terminations and Mounting
We can offer the following terminations:
- Threaded terminals
- Admiralty or Pillar type terminals
- Fibreglass leads
- Vulcanised weatherproof leads.
- Tags (spade terminals)
- Fixing Glands
Rod Element Mountings:
Elements can be supplied with various brackets, discs and clips fastened to them to facilitate installation. We can also supply flange-mounted elements crimped collars or compression fittings.
Types of Rod Elements
Finned Rod Element
Finned elements can also be supplied for improved heat distribution. This is due to the enlarged surface area provided by the alu zinc or stainless steel fins.
The fins can be circular or square.
Standard square fin sizes are:
- 8.0mm core diameter – 50x25mm
- 10.0mm core diameter – 70x40mm
- 8.5mm core diameter – 50x25mm
- 14.0mm core diameter – 80x40mm
Standard circular fin diameters are (inner/outer):
- 6.4/18 mm
- 10/26 mm
- 8.0/18 mm
- 12/22 mm
- 8.0/24 mm
- 12/28 mm
- 8.5/22 mm
- 14/34 mm
- 8.5/28 mm
- 16/32 mm
- 10/20 mm
- 18/34 mm
Defrost Rod Element Heaters
Defrost heaters can be supplied that are designed to work at low temperatures and are fitted with protected terminations and vulcanised silicone leads to protect against moisture ingress in cold, damp environments such as in refrigeration.
